# Water in Ireland

2 min read · Updated 13 September 2026

Water is a precious resource that is essential to daily life. In Ireland, it is important to understand the regulations, providers, and payment options for this commodity. In this article, we'll explore the basics of water supply and usage in Ireland.

## Water Supply

Water supply in Ireland is managed by a network of local authorities known as [Uisce Éireann (Irish Water, previously)](http://www.water.ie/). This semi-state body is responsible for the provision of clean and safe drinking water to the population of Ireland. The water is sourced from rivers, lakes, and underground wells and is treated to ensure that it meets the standards set by the World Health Organization. Uisce Éireann operates and maintains the water supply infrastructure, including pipes, treatment plants, and storage reservoirs.

## Billing and Payment

At present, domestic customers in Ireland are not required to pay for water and wastewater services as long as they do not exceed their Annual Allowance. However, [Uisce Éireann](http://www.water.ie/) has plans to implement a household charge for excessive water usage in 2022, as per the Irish Water Charges Plan. The exact date for the Excess Use Charge has not been determined yet, but it is expected that households will not start receiving bills until at least January 2024.

The Excess Use Charge is a fee aimed at reducing water waste and will be levied on households that consume an excessive amount of water. [Uisce Éireann](http://www.water.ie/) has the authority to apply this charge once a household exceeds their Annual Allowance.

It is important to note that the threshold for the Excess Use Charge is set at over 1.7 times the average household usage. This means that households will only be charged if they consume more than 213,000 liters (213 m³) of water per year. Additionally, households with more than four people will have a higher allowance.

## Conservation

In Ireland, water is a finite resource, and it is critical to conserve it for future generations. Irish Water provides a range of information and resources to help customers conserve water, including tips on reducing water usage, and information on water-saving devices. The company also encourages customers to report any leaks or water waste as soon as they become aware of them, to ensure that the water supply is managed efficiently.
