# Public Transportation System of Ireland

2 min read · Updated 13 September 2026

Ireland has a relatively efficient public transport system that includes buses, trains, trams, and taxis. While it may not be as extensive as some other European countries, the network covers most major towns and cities, and getting around is generally affordable and straightforward.

## Bus

Bus transport in Ireland is provided by both public and private companies. The national public bus company is Bus Éireann, which operates routes throughout the country. The larger cities, such as Dublin, Cork, Limerick, and Galway, have their local bus companies as well. Dublin Bus, for example, operates an extensive network of bus routes throughout the city and surrounding areas. Tickets can be purchased on board the bus or through various apps or top-up cards.

## Train

Ireland also has an extensive train network operated by Irish Rail, which covers most major towns and cities. Several types of trains are available, including commuter, intercity, and express trains. Commuter trains run frequently during peak hours and connect the suburbs to the city centers. Intercity trains run less frequently but connect major towns and cities across the country. Express trains are faster, and they provide a more luxurious experience. Tickets can be purchased at the station or online.

## Tram

Trams, also known as Luas, are a popular form of transport in Dublin and serve the city center and surrounding suburbs. The Green Line runs from St. Stephen's Green in the city center to Bride’s Glen in the south, while the Red Line runs from The Point to Saggart in the west. The trams run every 10–15 minutes, and tickets can be purchased at ticket machines, on board the tram, or through various apps.

## Taxis

Taxis are also readily available throughout Ireland, and they can be hailed on the street or booked through various apps. Taxis are metered, and fares vary depending on the time of day and distance traveled. It is important to note that some taxis only accept cash, so it's always a good idea to have some on hand.

Here are some taxi apps that operate in Ireland:

2. [Uber](http://www.uber.com/ie/en/)
3. [Bolt](http://bolt.eu/en-ie/)
4. [Lynk](http://www.lynk.ie/)

## Bicycles

In addition to these modes of public transport, Ireland also has an extensive network of cycling and walking paths. Bicycles can be rented from various locations throughout the country, and walking is a popular way to explore the city centers.

Overall, Ireland's public transport system is reliable and affordable, and it is a great way to get around the country. Whether you're commuting to work, exploring the city, or traveling across the country, there are plenty of options available to suit your needs.
