So the first question most new arrivals ask is how long it takes. The honest answer is that the Department of Social Protection does not publish a processing time, and the total wait is made up of two parts you can influence and one you cannot. This guide explains the process step by step, what documents you need, how long each stage tends to take as of September 2026, and what you can get on with while you wait. ## The three stages of the wait

The Department's own wording is worth quoting: "During the in-person appointment, your application will not be processed immediately. If approved, your PPS number will be sent to you via post at a later date." Plan on the whole process taking several weeks from arrival, and treat anything faster as a bonus. ## Step 1: apply online on MyWelfare You must be aged 18 or over and physically in Ireland (or Northern Ireland) to apply as a resident. You cannot apply in advance from abroad on the grounds that you are about to move. Create a basic **MyGovID** account if you have not already, log into **MyWelfare.ie**, choose "Apply for a PPS number", and fill in the form. You will be asked why you need the number; acceptable reasons include taking up employment, registering for a course, applying for or exchanging a driving licence, accessing public health services and registering the birth of a child. You then pick a location, date and time for your appointment. If you are applying for a child as well, you can do both in one application, and the child must also attend. ## Step 2: the documents you need Bring originals to the appointment; uploads alone are not enough. You need proof of identity, proof of address and proof of the reason you need the number.

Other documents that help staff confirm your identity, if you have them: a medical card, a European Health Insurance Card, a debit card with a statement, a student card, or a Revenue document. ## Step 3: after the appointment The officer verifies your documents and photographs you, and your application goes for further checks. The number is posted to the address you gave, so use an address where you will still be receiving mail in a few weeks; a friend's or your employer's address is fine if they agree. Once you have it, it is yours for life. There is no card at this stage; if you later want a Public Services Card, that is a separate application at an Intreo centre and it upgrades your MyGovID to verified. ## What you can do while you wait - **Start work.** You do not need the number to start a job. Give it to your employer when it arrives. Until then you will be on emergency tax, which is refunded through payroll once Revenue has your details. - **Register with Revenue as soon as the number arrives.** Create a myAccount and register the job under Jobs and Pensions; this is what triggers your tax credits and the emergency tax refund. - **Rent a home.** Landlords do not need your PPS number to sign a lease. - **Open a fintech account.** Several online banks accept a passport and a foreign address; traditional Irish banks will generally want the PPS number. - **Book immigration registration.** The IRP process is separate and does not wait for the PPS number. - **See a GP privately** and buy a Leap Card, a SIM and a TV licence. ## Special cases People who arrived from Ukraine under the Temporary Protection Directive should not apply online; the Department asks them to go directly to a PPS Number Allocation Centre, where a dedicated arrangement applies. People living outside Ireland who need a number for an Irish matter (for example probate or Revenue) can apply online or by post, but this route is not available to people who intend to move here. Children born in Ireland get a number automatically when the birth is registered.
