South Africans come for jobs in tech, finance, healthcare and engineering, for the safety and the schools, and because English is the working language. The single biggest change in recent years is that **South Africans now need a visa**, so timing your move around the visa process matters.

## Do you need a visa? Yes. From **10 July 2024** holders of South African passports are visa required for Ireland, ending decades of visa free travel. Short visits need a C visa; a move needs a **long stay D visa**, applied for online through AVATS and submitted at a Visa Application Centre in Johannesburg, Cape Town or Durban. The visa gets you across the border; your right to stay comes from the permit or scheme behind it, and you must register for an **Irish Residence Permit** (300 euro) within 90 days of arrival. - **Critical Skills Employment Permit** for roles on the critical skills list (ICT, engineering, nursing, doctors, accountants and more). Minimum salary **40,904 euro** from 1 March 2026, or 68,911 euro for other eligible jobs. No labour market needs test. Your spouse or partner can join you straight away on Stamp 1G and work without a permit. - **General Employment Permit** for other jobs at 36,605 euro (32,691 euro for healthcare assistants and home carers), usually after a labour market needs test. - **Study** on Stamp 2, followed by the Third Level Graduate Programme (12 to 24 months of Stamp 1G work permission). - **Family** routes to join an Irish, EU or UK citizen spouse or partner. If a parent or grandparent was born in Ireland, check the **Foreign Births Register** first: an Irish passport removes the need for any of the above. A British passport also lets you live and work in Ireland freely under the Common Travel Area. There is no Working Holiday scheme with South Africa. ## Your driving licence South Africa is **on the NDLS list of recognised states**, so you can exchange a full South African licence for an Irish one without a theory or driving test. You need an original **letter of entitlement** from the South African licensing authority, dated within six months of your application, confirming your licence categories and whether your test was in a manual or automatic car (an automatic test means an automatic only Irish licence). NDLS has flagged delays in getting these verified in South Africa, so request the letter before you leave. The exchange fee is 65 euro. You can drive on your South African licence for up to 12 months after becoming resident while the exchange goes through. ## Tax, pensions and money Ireland and South Africa have a **double taxation agreement**, so income taxed in one country is credited in the other. You become Irish tax resident after 183 days in a calendar year. On the South African side, decide whether to cease tax residency with SARS; the "exit charge" treats you as having sold worldwide assets on the day you leave, so get advice before the move rather than after. There is **no bilateral social security agreement**. Irish PRSI and South African UIF or retirement fund contributions cannot be combined; each country pays what you have earned under its own rules. Moving money out uses your **single discretionary allowance** (raised to R2 million per calendar year in the 2026 Budget) and, with a SARS tax compliance status, the **R10 million foreign investment allowance**. Your South African credit record does not transfer: Irish lenders only see the Central Credit Register, so open an Irish bank account early and build a local history. ## Healthcare Your visa application must include private medical insurance. Once you are **ordinarily resident** (living here or intending to for at least a year) you can use the public HSE system. Public hospital inpatient charges were abolished in 2023, but GP visits cost roughly 50 to 70 euro and waiting lists for non-urgent care are long. Coming from a medical aid culture, most South Africans buy private insurance from VHI, Laya or Irish Life Health. Buy it **within 9 months of arriving** if you are 35 or older to avoid a Lifetime Community Rating loading. ## Bringing your things and your pet There are **no non-stop flights between South Africa and Ireland**. Most people connect through London, Amsterdam, Paris, Frankfurt, Doha or Dubai, roughly 14 to 17 hours in total. Household goods you have owned for 6 months can enter free of duty and VAT under **Transfer of Residence relief** once you have lived outside the EU for 12 months. South Africa is an **unlisted country** for pet travel. Your dog or cat needs a microchip, a rabies vaccination, then a **rabies antibody blood test** at least 30 days after the vaccine, and a **three month wait** after a successful sample before it can enter Ireland. Add an EU animal health certificate, tapeworm treatment for dogs, and advance notice to the Department of Agriculture. ## First 30 days checklist 1. Apply for a **PPS number** through MyWelfare.ie. 2. Book your **IRP registration** with Immigration Service Delivery within 90 days (300 euro). 3. Open an **Irish bank account** and register with Revenue myAccount so you are not on emergency tax. 4. Register with a **GP** and choose a private health insurer. 5.
